Scotland, the mid-1980s. Teenager John Davidson has the world at his feet. Confident, smart and in with a chance of landing the football scholarship of his dreams, John has a bright future ahead of him. Until, one day, he begins to behave in ways he can neither control nor explain – twitching, shouting and swearing at the worst possible moments.
Diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at a time when the condition was little known and entirely misunderstood, John’s world quickly falls apart around him. But a chance encounter with an old friend sets John on a new path, kick-starting a remarkable journey that will take John to places he could never imagine.
Based on an inspiring true story, I Swear is a brilliant example of feel-good British filmmaking – it’s tough, tender, hilarious and heartfelt. Robert Aramayo gives a breakout, BAFTA-winning performance as John Davidson, and is backed by an impressive supporting cast that includes local hero Maxine Peake and Scottish stalwarts Peter Mullan and Shirley Henderson.
