DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Vale is delighted to welcome The Brothers Gillespie\, who have been described by Folk Radio UK as ‘weaving an especially compelling magic’\, and ‘showing British acoustic music in its best possible light’\, the music of Northumbrian duo The Brothers Gillespie is animated by lyrical songwriting\, fine fingerstyle guitar playing\, multi-instrumental musicianship and ‘the glorious tones of their blood harmony’ (Sam Lee).   \nBrothers James and Sam Gillespie found their sound growing up in the fells and valleys of Northumberland\, their songs often describing relationships with wild places and the experience of finding oneself in a world alive with soul. The music comes to them most strongly when walking in the borderlands with their packs and instruments which remains a regular practice for them. This spirit is channeled into their live performances which have a rare and intimate energy\, both ethereal and earthy\, romantic and radical.  \nThe brothers have travelled far and wide with their music and have played at Cambridge and Sidmouth Folk Festivals and opened for Lankum and Sam Lee. In 2021 they featured in the English Heritage ‘Songs of England’ recording series that appeared on BBC Radio 4. The release of their new album ‘The Merciful Road’ (‘pure magic’\, Living Tradition) in Spring 2022 saw them embark on their most extensive national tour to date.   ‘The Merciful Road’ was recorded in a cottage by the banks of the river Tweed and like their previous album ‘The Fell’\, it blends rootsy\, acoustic elements to create a rich warm sound with a touch of vintage magic. And if you’re lucky and get their early you may even catch the end of the rehearsal of Global Grooves’ very own Carnival Bloco featuring Carnival percussion\, horns and dance. \nWhat is Pagode? \nPagode is a type of samba originating in Rio de Janeiro\, Brazil. Distinguished by rhythmic improvisation\, its acoustic sound is created using a variety of percussion instruments\, song and string instruments such as Cavaquinho and guitar.\n \n

Since bursting onto the scene in 2014\, she’s been a regular tour support for Dr John Cooper Clarke in venues across the UK and Europe. In 2016\, she released her début album Hot Plastic Moon with spoken word label Nymphs and Thugs. In 2018 her début poetry collection The Universe and Me was published by Wrecking Ball Press. In September 2021\, Toria was featured on the front cover and centrefold of The Big Issue North. Her second collection Another Time in Spacewas published in December 2022. Toria delivers spoken word workshops to community groups\, schools\, and prisons. She is passionate about using poetry as a vehicle for self-expression and connection.\n\n‘Joan Jett and Patti Smith’s better-looking kid sister.’ – Dr John Cooper Clarke\n\n‘Powerful\, accessible\, intelligent\, and musical. Just about all the things I love in a poet.’ – Dr Benjamin Zephaniah\n\nCarla Mellor is a Wigan-based Yorkshire poet who writes accessible\, down-to-earth\, and relatable ‘poetry for the people’. As a gritty performer-poet\, he’s supported many bands\, including I am Kloot\, Badly Drawn Boy\, and The Fall. and has toured the world with John Cooper Clarke since 2010. His musical collaborations have seen him working with New Order and Philip Glass. His Ode To St. Anthony\, a poem dedicated to the Factory Records boss Tony Wilson and put to classical music by the composer Joe Duddell\, went to Number 1 in three official UK charts in August 2015. He has also worked in thousands of schools and his books are used in education throughout the UK. Passionate about taking live poetry to places it wouldn’t normally reach\, he’s read his work in prisons\, young offenders institutions\, mental health hospitals\, children’s homes\, youth clubs\, and pubs. He’s an Associate Fellow and Artist in Residence at the University of Westminster in London and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Manchester Metropolitan University for his groundbreaking work with poetry in education. \n‘I love Mike Garry’s poetry. DESCRIPTION:The Vale is excited to welcome Suntou Susso\, a multi-instrumentalist: Kora player\, percussionist\, singer and composer from The Gambia to our stage this May. Born a Griot in a 700-year-old tradition\, the Kora – harp-lute with 22 strings – is unique to the Griots of the Mandinka people. Griots have a unique societal role as oral historians\, transmitting and preserving a people’s culture through the generations in song\, music and poetry.
