SUMMARY:Film Screening and Workshop: 'Making Waves; stories of water'
DESCRIPTION:Join us for 5 short films on the theme of water power and protecting our waterways.  \nAhead of our Celebration event\, Carnival Flow; a celebration of water\, we’ll be screening 5 short films on the theme of water. Local and international snapshots of water powered energy and what it’s vital we keep our waterways clean.   \n  \n6pm Felting a seascape workshop with Emily \n7pm Doors (Bar open) \n7.30pm Films \n8.30pm Q&A and grab a drink \n9.30pm Ends \n  \n– Untitled News Segment\, 2021 \nOnly 11 percent of Malawians have access to electricity. In rural areas of the country\, only 4 percent do. That makes it one of the world’s least electrified countries. One man has taken matters into his own hands\, building a DIY hydroelectric turbine\, without any professional training\, to power his village. \n  \n–Rush\, 2022\, Mike Coggan \nRush‘ explores the life and philosophy of super-volunteer Oly Rush\, who ditched his 9-5 job for beach cleans and record-breaking swims. Oly is responsible for removing truckloads of plastic from the Dorset coastline\, all whilst training for long-distance swims to raise money for environmental causes. \n  \n-Village of the Watermills\, 1990\, Akira Kurosawa \nThis short film is part of Japanese Director\, Akira Kurosawa’s film of short vignettes\, Dreams. \nAkira Kurosawa dreams of a sustainable\, happy world to live in; he calls this world ‘Village of the Watermills’. This short film is the last in Kurosawa’s collection of eight shorts called ‘Dreams’. All eight films are actual dreams that Kurosawa had at different points in his life. This film shares a dream of hope from Kurosawa’s mind. \n  \n-The Power of Water\, 2022\, NHPBS \na Public Service Broadcasting Film from the USA. It tells the story of Bob King\, a New Hampshire entrepreneur\, whose life’s work has been rehabilitating abandoned dams to produce clean energy. A window into the history of hydropower in New England\, the ongoing energy transition\, the importance of land conservation\, and how we all can be part of the solution as we face these challenges together. \n  \nThe Water Holds Me / The Water Binds Us\, 2021\, Lily Mae Kroese\nLily Mae Kroese is a filmmaker specialising in animation\, illustration\, and writing. Her work is characterised by a unique blend of traditional and digital methods\, creating a handmade feel that engages viewers with the creative process. Drawn from research with the wild swimming community across the UK\, this short film is based on the stories of women who dip\, dive and swim in rivers\, lakes and seas. \n  \nSpeakers: \nHear from Mossley’s own waterways champion\, Sam from Reclaim river Tame and his journey to swim the Tame to highlight pollutants in our river. \nTake a peak at The Vale’s own micro hydro generator and hear from the team behind it.  \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nWe offer a ‘Donate What You Can’ pricing structure so that everyone can join us. A suggested donation is £3-5 film film screening tickets\, and £10 combined\, if you are able to do so.  \nThere are a limited number of combined tickets for a felting workshop to create a seascape and film screening available. Book to secure your space. \nThanks to our funders Saddleworth Community Hydro\, The Young Foundation and UKRI. \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nYou may also be interested in Sun Beams; stories of the sun 29th August.

SUMMARY:Sunday Sessions: Birthday Special
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special edition of our Sunday Sessions\, with special guests! \nOn Sun 15th Sept (1pm-5pm) you can enjoy your fix of Latin and Brazilian music\, this time with two special guests joining us to celebrate The Vale’s 3rd birthday for an extended afternoon of live music. \nHenry Botham \nHenry Botham is a professional pianist from Manchester\, UK\, best known for playing piano in 52 Skidoo\, The Nightcreatures and No Good Beatniks. He is one of the country’s leading Stride\, New Orleans and Blues pianists. He has a new solo piano album and is performing solo piano shows throughout the UK. The music is inspired by the great New Orleans pianists Dr John\, James Booker\, Professor Longhair and Jelly Roll Morton but is very much Henry’s own creation and includes repertoire by such diverse artists as Jimi Hendrix\, The Prodigy\, The Beatles and Iggy Pop. Foot-tapping goodness not to be missed! \nCoruja Jones \nAlso joining us ahead of his upcoming new EP launch is Coruja Jones\, accompanied by trusty guitarist Jake Stentiford. Coruja Jones is a songwriting project from Manchester (UK) based musician and songwriter Dan Jones\, originally hailing from Dudley in The West Midlands. \nDescribed by Tom Robinson (BBC6 Music) as “deft and assured”\, Coruja Jones’ music offers dreamy\, melancholic\, indie-folk delivered through beautiful songs with soaring high notes\, combined with intricate\, delicate guitar work into cavernous reverbs\, plus killer grooves\, which take aim at your heart.  \n2024 sees the release of his next record\, ‘Undo’. The EP delves into the healing process in different forms\, examining the calm and the chaos that can come from attempted self-betterment\, and witnessing and wanting to heal other’s hardship\, all through the lens of love. Produced by Sam Vicary (The Cinematic Orchestra). \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nWe’re throwing three birthday celebrations this month; one for each year of The Vale! Check out the other two below… \nCarnival Flow; A Celebration of Water \nGrupo Lokito + Congolese Dance Workshop

SUMMARY:St John's Band: 90th Anniversary Concert
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to host Mossley’s St John’s Band for their 90th Anniversary Concert; an impressive milestone! \nAdult tickets available for £10\, under 16s go for £2. \nTickets available HERE \n  \nHistory of the Band \nThe Rev. W. Leeming was the man responsible for the formation of St Johns Band Mossley in 1933. He was a great Brass Band enthusiast and had formed Brass Bands at all of his previous churches as way of extending the social and cultural activities of the church. At the formation prospective players\, who had to be communicant members of the church\, got together to form the nucleus of the band. By May 1934\, after a lot of tuition and marching drills up and down Quickedge in all weathers\, the band were ready for their first Whit Friday Walks. They wore uniforms purchased from Eagley Mills (Bolton). \nDuring the war St John’s became the band of the (Home Guard) 35th Cheshire Regiment. At the cessation of hostilities membership rules were relaxed so that players from outside the parish could join\, gradually building the band up to full strength. \nIn 1983 the band reached one of its highest points by qualifying to play in the Fourth Section of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain at the Royal Albert Hall. Unfortunately\, the band was unplaced\, but what an unforgettable experience for those involved. \nThis level of success was achieved with the help and guidance of some well known conductors\, including Arthur Schofield (1970-1978)\, Harold Robinson (1979-1982) and Bert Howarth (1982-1983). \nNevertheless\, with players leaving for various reasons over the years the band has been on the verge of closure on three occasions\, twice in the early seventies when the band was lacking in numbers to lead the church in the whit Walks and once again in the late eighties when the band was struggling to hold rehearsals with regularity. \nThen in 1990 a group of community minded people notably Ralph Towle\, Rodney Oliver\, Ian Marsh and Barry Hague formed a committee inviting first Max Wassal as Secretary\, later Graham Hutchinson and Stephen Corbett to coach and train the band made up mostly of school children. This proved to be a huge success and Stephen stayed at the band as musical director until 2012. \nIn 1995 once again the band lost players when six of its leading members went to university\, a body blow after three years of successful results at contests. In seventy-five years (three generations) the world\, peoples lifestyles and interests have changed immensely and the band has had to change suit. \nIn 2012 the band were joined by Musical Director Paul Exton-McGuinness. Since then the band have gone from strength to strength\, with a new training band and beginner band to focus on eventually bringing fresh new players in to the main band. Paul left the band in July 2018. \nIn September 2018 Paul Towle was appointed as Musical Director\, Paul has long running family connections with the band\, his Grandfather\, Ralph Towle being one of the leading members of the group that helped get the band back on its feet almost 30 years ago. \nAlthough the band is not directly linked with the church anymore\, they do provide the music for the services throughout the year such as Christmas\, Harvest and of course the Whit Friday Walks. \nIn January 2023 David.W.Ashworth joined the band as musical director and we are extremely grateful for the time that David spent with us and shared his wealth of knowledge and experience. \nAs we move through 2024 and beyond\, we look forwards to what the future holds\, with a full thriving band the future is looking very bright. We’re extremely fortunate that Martin Gernon has stepped in to take the band to the Northwest Area Contest and hopefully this is a sign of good things to come.
