SUMMARY:Waterways Walk for The Great Big Green Week 2024
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate The Great Big Green Week join Matt Catt for a walk from Micklehurst Brook at The Vale to Dovestone reservoir. \nAlong the way discover the importance of water to our milltown’s history and its present use as a source of energy. \nOn arrival at Dovestones there’s a chance for a tour of Saddleworth Community Hydro station from the team who developed and maintain the site. \n \nAbout the Walk\nThis walk is available to view on Komoot. It is rated as ‘Easy’. \nIt is 3.16 miles and will take approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes- 2 hours based on a gentle pace with stops to discuss points of interest. The walk includes some uphill and downhill as well as some uneven surfaces. Most of the walk is off road apart from crossing the top of Micklehurst Road and crossing Huddersfield road at the start. \nAt this time of year you may see swallows\, martins and swifts\, as well as lapwings! There are also our local highland cows\, and other farmyard friends to greet along the way. \nArrival\nPlease arrive at The Vale from 10.30am for an 11am start. There’s time then to use the facilities and gather before we set off together. If you’re unsure how to find us please use the visit us page. Remember don’t put ‘The Vale’ in sat nav as that will take you to a road called ‘The Vale’. \nLoos\nThere are public toilets at The Vale and Dovestone reservoir. \nOnward Travel\nWalkers can:\n-Enjoy a loop of Dovestones track\n-Walk back to The Vale\n-Take the 350 bus from the Clarence Hotel back to Mossley\n-Get the train from Greenfield station. \nClothing\nSturdy shoes for any uneven ground\, weather appropriate clothing as it may be sunny\, rainy\, windy etc. Sun cream with a high SPF\, a hat. \nWhat to bring\nWe’d recommend bringing a reusable water bottle which can be filled at The Vale and at Dovestones. A small bag with any snacks you might wish to have\, or a picnic to have on arrival at Dovestones. A camera to capture the day\, a map to follow if you wish\, and any personal items you’d usually carry with you. \nThere is usually a food van at Dovestone reservoir as well as local shops in Greenfield. \nMatt will have a small first aid kit and is a trained First Aider. \nYoung people\nFamilies and young people are very welcome on the walk. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult and are the responsibility of their parent/guardian at all times. \nDogs\nDogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead and only guide dogs are allowed inside The Vale. \nContributions\nThis event is free to access. We suggest a contribution of £3 to keep The Vale delivering creative opportunities for local people. There will be a donations box at The Vale or you can use this link to donate online.

SUMMARY:Grupo Lokito + Global Grooves Youth Bloco
DESCRIPTION:‘Grass roots music played with gusto. Live entertainment at its best.’ – Chilli Fiesta \nThe Vale is delighted to welcome the dazzling Grupo Lokito who fuse contemporary Congolese and Cuban music creating a modern day cocktail of two of the great world musics. \nThe glorious melodious vocals of Congolese front men Eugene Makuta and Iddo Donnatell blend with soaring guitars courtesy of guitarists Kenyan rising star Shama Shah and Congolese legend Ladi Mbala and the lilting keyboards of Latin piano player Sara McGuinness. All of this sits on top of the rhythmic powerhouse of Ernesto Marichales(drums)\, Emeris Solis (Congas) and Jimmy Martinez (Bass). \nSince their formation in 2006 the band have gone from strength to strength\, completing several UK tours and building a solid following. As if the groove weren’t enough\, the band have developed a rapport with their audiences which gets everyone up on their feet. SUMMARY:St John's Band: 90th Anniversary Concert
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to host Mossley’s St John’s Band for their 90th Anniversary Concert; an impressive milestone! \nAdult tickets available for £10\, under 16s go for £2. \nTickets available HERE \n  \nHistory of the Band \nThe Rev. W. Leeming was the man responsible for the formation of St Johns Band Mossley in 1933. He was a great Brass Band enthusiast and had formed Brass Bands at all of his previous churches as way of extending the social and cultural activities of the church. At the formation prospective players\, who had to be communicant members of the church\, got together to form the nucleus of the band. By May 1934\, after a lot of tuition and marching drills up and down Quickedge in all weathers\, the band were ready for their first Whit Friday Walks. They wore uniforms purchased from Eagley Mills (Bolton). \nDuring the war St John’s became the band of the (Home Guard) 35th Cheshire Regiment. At the cessation of hostilities membership rules were relaxed so that players from outside the parish could join\, gradually building the band up to full strength. \nIn 1983 the band reached one of its highest points by qualifying to play in the Fourth Section of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain at the Royal Albert Hall. Unfortunately\, the band was unplaced\, but what an unforgettable experience for those involved. \nThis level of success was achieved with the help and guidance of some well known conductors\, including Arthur Schofield (1970-1978)\, Harold Robinson (1979-1982) and Bert Howarth (1982-1983). \nNevertheless\, with players leaving for various reasons over the years the band has been on the verge of closure on three occasions\, twice in the early seventies when the band was lacking in numbers to lead the church in the whit Walks and once again in the late eighties when the band was struggling to hold rehearsals with regularity. \nThen in 1990 a group of community minded people notably Ralph Towle\, Rodney Oliver\, Ian Marsh and Barry Hague formed a committee inviting first Max Wassal as Secretary\, later Graham Hutchinson and Stephen Corbett to coach and train the band made up mostly of school children. This proved to be a huge success and Stephen stayed at the band as musical director until 2012. \nIn 1995 once again the band lost players when six of its leading members went to university\, a body blow after three years of successful results at contests. In seventy-five years (three generations) the world\, peoples lifestyles and interests have changed immensely and the band has had to change suit. \nIn 2012 the band were joined by Musical Director Paul Exton-McGuinness. Since then the band have gone from strength to strength\, with a new training band and beginner band to focus on eventually bringing fresh new players in to the main band. Paul left the band in July 2018. \nIn September 2018 Paul Towle was appointed as Musical Director\, Paul has long running family connections with the band\, his Grandfather\, Ralph Towle being one of the leading members of the group that helped get the band back on its feet almost 30 years ago. \nAlthough the band is not directly linked with the church anymore\, they do provide the music for the services throughout the year such as Christmas\, Harvest and of course the Whit Friday Walks. \nIn January 2023 David.W.Ashworth joined the band as musical director and we are extremely grateful for the time that David spent with us and shared his wealth of knowledge and experience. \nAs we move through 2024 and beyond\, we look forwards to what the future holds\, with a full thriving band the future is looking very bright. We’re extremely fortunate that Martin Gernon has stepped in to take the band to the Northwest Area Contest and hopefully this is a sign of good things to come.
