SUMMARY:Henge + DOGSHOW
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nAttention Humans! This is HENGE.\nWe are not from this world.\nWe bring you music from distant planets.\nWe offer this gift for the edification of humankind… so that eventually your species may put an end to war and set up new homes in space. \nThe Vale is excited to welcome Henge to occupy our space\, bringing a mix of rave and prog rock that nobody knew existed. It is energetic\, subversive and invigoratingly playful\, jovially going ‘where no one has gone before’. Ultimately\, HENGE are spreading a message of hope which leaves audiences feeling amused and uplifted in equal measures. \nExtra-terrestrial joymongers – HENGE – have been delighting audiences in the UK and Europe since they landed on Planet Earth eight years ago. Their scintillating live performances earned them ‘Best Live Act’ at the Independent Festival Awards and they have since cemented their reputation with three acclaimed albums\, numerous tours and regular main-stage festival appearances.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZKer_eimgA”][vc_empty_space][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ubm138FI_mw”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Support: DOGSHOW \nFormed by two brothers\, Dogshow traverse the genre-fluid astral planes creating music for dancing. SUMMARY:The Brothers Gillespie + Chloe Lawrence
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Vale is delighted to welcome The Brothers Gillespie\, who have been described by Folk Radio UK as ‘weaving an especially compelling magic’\, and ‘showing British acoustic music in its best possible light’\, the music of Northumbrian duo The Brothers Gillespie is animated by lyrical songwriting\, fine fingerstyle guitar playing\, multi-instrumental musicianship and ‘the glorious tones of their blood harmony’ (Sam Lee).   \nBrothers James and Sam Gillespie found their sound growing up in the fells and valleys of Northumberland\, their songs often describing relationships with wild places and the experience of finding oneself in a world alive with soul. The music comes to them most strongly when walking in the borderlands with their packs and instruments which remains a regular practice for them. This spirit is channeled into their live performances which have a rare and intimate energy\, both ethereal and earthy\, romantic and radical.  \nThe brothers have travelled far and wide with their music and have played at Cambridge and Sidmouth Folk Festivals and opened for Lankum and Sam Lee. In 2021 they featured in the English Heritage ‘Songs of England’ recording series that appeared on BBC Radio 4. The release of their new album ‘The Merciful Road’ (‘pure magic’\, Living Tradition) in Spring 2022 saw them embark on their most extensive national tour to date.   ‘The Merciful Road’ was recorded in a cottage by the banks of the river Tweed and like their previous album ‘The Fell’\, it blends rootsy\, acoustic elements to create a rich warm sound with a touch of vintage magic. In some ways it is an album about finding the thread of love and belonging in a world that seems to be nonetheless unravelling. \n“Anyone who has seen the brothers live will surely attest that it is an experience that will stay with you. There is a feeling of warmth that exudes from them and affects everyone in the room… I am not usually given to grand statements\, but I think this will be one of the finest albums you will hear this year! ” \n— Nygel Packett\, Folk London review of ‘The Merciful Road’ \n“This is a moving and surprising album. Stunning songs beautifully sung and played. Without doubt a classic in the making from a duo potent with potential.” \n— Northern Sky\, 5 star review of The Fell[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAit00x8XQQ&t=1s”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Support: CHLOE LAWRENCE \nChloe Lawrence\, born and bred in Southern Spain to Essex parents\, is a Manchester based singer/songwriter and street musician. Performing on a Spanish nylon string guitar\, Chloe combines sprinklings of classical folk music and intricate finger-picking with her own fierce\, independent modernity. Moments of spoken word and unexpected pop vocal riffing provoke emotional digging around relatable themes; a blend that serves to differentiate her style from any particular genre. Chloe plays on streets all over the UK and beyond; feeling busking to be the rawest form of performance and the best way of restoring faith in humanity.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwtjNZDwgco”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Film Screening: In Our Hands
DESCRIPTION:Join The Vale\, Fairtrade Mossley\, and Incredible Edible Mossley for a film screening of ‘In Our Hands’ Thursday 21st March 7.30pm \nFood and farming is in crisis. In just over a decade we’ve lost more than 33\,000 farms from our countryside\, and alongside this\, bad diet is now causing more health problems than smoking! The fundamental link between people\, food and the very land we stand on is being broken. Yet it need not be this way. \nThere is a growing movement of farmers and food workers who are creating vibrant farms\, living soils\, thriving food markets and a fairer food system for all. At the heart of all change lies a story\, and In Our Hands is the story of a new kind of farm\, a new kind of food and a new kind of society. \n  \nSchedule: \n18:00 – 19:00 Still life drawing with Little Owl Studio \n19:00 Doors for screening and bar open \n19:30 – 20:40 Film screening \n20:40 Stick around for a drink to discuss the film’s themes after the screening. \n  \nThis is a free event but ticket booking is advised to avoid disappointment. \nFriends of The Vale have a live Crowdfunder for growing\, gardening and engaging with nature. If this free film and workshop inspire you to contribute to this work Aviva will currently match those donations here. \nFunded by: \nUK RESEARCH AND INNOVATION | THE YOUNG FOUNDATION | SADDLEWORTH COMMUNITY HYDRO

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nThe Vale is delighted to welcome Ríoghnach Connolly & Honeyfeet\, with their broad terrain of musical textures from esoteric protest songs to foot-tapping and floor-thumping dance rhythms\, Ríoghnach Connolly & Honeyfeet are an genre-defying ensemble based in Manchester. \nFronted by award-winning vocalist Ríoghnach\, her evocative vocal is amply backed by the quintet of Lorien Garth Edwards\, bass; Ellis Davies\, guitar; John Ellis\, keyboards; Biff Roxby\, brass; and Phil Howley\, drums; collectively known as Honeyfeet. Procuring an eclectic\, heady and original sound\, the band’s distinctive sonic signature spans from the bountiful to the subtle; touching on everything from big-band swing to Alabama blues-tinged folk. \nEqually proficient in headlining festival stages as they are stripping back to sublime obscure jazz on theatre stages\, Ríoghnach Connolly & Honeyfeet have finessed their incredible live show on stages for well over a decade. Proving to be electrifying headliners of stages at the likes of as Shambala\, Beautiful Days and Moovin\, the band have also wowed audiences at major festivals such as Glastonbury\, Boomtown\, Wilderness\, Secret Garden Party and Kendal Calling along the way too. \n \nSupport Acts: \nBassie Gracie \nBassie Gracie is a festival performance poet hailing from Brighton. Known for her rhythmic rhyme schemes\, feel good feminism and musical musings on existence. \nMost commonly found shoeless on the Monday morning of a festival telling a 70 year old man ‘punk was better in my day’. \n  \nStefan Pope \nStefan’s eclectic combination of blues\, world\, jazz and expertly crafted showmanship makes him a memorable and interactive performer like no other. \nPerforming regularly at festivals such as Womad & Glastonbury\, Stefan has received critical acclaim for his musicianship\, poetic intriguing lyrics and electric high energy performances.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Signs of Spring Walk
DESCRIPTION:As part of Greater Manchester Walking Festival we’re leading a walk to engage in nature as we walk. Join Jayne to walk whilst taking in our natural surroundings and observing the many signs of spring. Create a natural artwork with found materials along the way and enjoy a brew back at The Vale. \n \n  \nThe route for the walk goes up Castle Hill and then onto a rougher uneven path\, over Moor Edge road\, and back down to Huddersfield road\, with a short walk back to the Vale. \nThis is approximately 1.7mi / 2.8KM long and can take just up to 2 hrs. \nThese times depend on the walkers and how they engage with their surroundings. \n  \nClothing: Sturdy shoes for any uneven ground\, weather appropriate clothing as it may be sunny\, rainy\, windy etc. \nWhat to bring: You shouldn’t need anything with you for this walk but you may wish to bring a small bag to collect natural materials for an artwork\, a notebook and pencil to draw anything you see\, a camera to capture the day\, and any personal items you’d usually carry with you. \nYoung people:\nFamilies and young people are very welcome on the walk. SUMMARY:Waterways Walk for The Great Big Green Week 2024
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate The Great Big Green Week join Matt Catt for a walk from Micklehurst Brook at The Vale to Dovestone reservoir. \nAlong the way discover the importance of water to our milltown’s history and its present use as a source of energy. \nOn arrival at Dovestones there’s a chance for a tour of Saddleworth Community Hydro station from the team who developed and maintain the site. \n \nAbout the Walk\nThis walk is available to view on Komoot. It is rated as ‘Easy’. \nIt is 3.16 miles and will take approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes- 2 hours based on a gentle pace with stops to discuss points of interest. The walk includes some uphill and downhill as well as some uneven surfaces. Most of the walk is off road apart from crossing the top of Micklehurst Road and crossing Huddersfield road at the start. \nAt this time of year you may see swallows\, martins and swifts\, as well as lapwings! There are also our local highland cows\, and other farmyard friends to greet along the way. \nArrival\nPlease arrive at The Vale from 10.30am for an 11am start. There’s time then to use the facilities and gather before we set off together. If you’re unsure how to find us please use the visit us page. Remember don’t put ‘The Vale’ in sat nav as that will take you to a road called ‘The Vale’. \nLoos\nThere are public toilets at The Vale and Dovestone reservoir. \nOnward Travel\nWalkers can:\n-Enjoy a loop of Dovestones track\n-Walk back to The Vale\n-Take the 350 bus from the Clarence Hotel back to Mossley\n-Get the train from Greenfield station. \nClothing\nSturdy shoes for any uneven ground\, weather appropriate clothing as it may be sunny\, rainy\, windy etc. Sun cream with a high SPF\, a hat. \nWhat to bring\nWe’d recommend bringing a reusable water bottle which can be filled at The Vale and at Dovestones. A small bag with any snacks you might wish to have\, or a picnic to have on arrival at Dovestones. A camera to capture the day\, a map to follow if you wish\, and any personal items you’d usually carry with you. \nThere is usually a food van at Dovestone reservoir as well as local shops in Greenfield. \nMatt will have a small first aid kit and is a trained First Aider. \nYoung people\nFamilies and young people are very welcome on the walk. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult and are the responsibility of their parent/guardian at all times. \nDogs\nDogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead and only guide dogs are allowed inside The Vale. \nContributions\nThis event is free to access.
