In just over a decade we’ve lost more than 33\,000 farms from our countryside\, and alongside this\, bad diet is now causing more health problems than smoking! The fundamental link between people\, food and the very land we stand on is being broken. Yet it need not be this way. \nThere is a growing movement of farmers and food workers who are creating vibrant farms\, living soils\, thriving food markets and a fairer food system for all. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Vale is delighted to welcome The Brothers Gillespie\, who have been described by Folk Radio UK as ‘weaving an especially compelling magic’\, and ‘showing British acoustic music in its best possible light’\, the music of Northumbrian duo The Brothers Gillespie is animated by lyrical songwriting\, fine fingerstyle guitar playing\, multi-instrumental musicianship and ‘the glorious tones of their blood harmony’ (Sam Lee).   \nBrothers James and Sam Gillespie found their sound growing up in the fells and valleys of Northumberland\, their songs often describing relationships with wild places and the experience of finding oneself in a world alive with soul. The music comes to them most strongly when walking in the borderlands with their packs and instruments which remains a regular practice for them. This spirit is channeled into their live performances which have a rare and intimate energy\, both ethereal and earthy\, romantic and radical.  \nThe brothers have travelled far and wide with their music and have played at Cambridge and Sidmouth Folk Festivals and opened for Lankum and Sam Lee. In 2021 they featured in the English Heritage ‘Songs of England’ recording series that appeared on BBC Radio 4. Distinguished by rhythmic improvisation\, its acoustic sound is created using a variety of percussion instruments\, song and string instruments such as Cavaquinho and guitar.\n \n

DESCRIPTION:The Vale in association with Nick Toczek presents… IN OTHER WORDS! The very best in performance poetry.\n\nThe Line Up:\n\nToria Garbutt is a poet and educator. Since bursting onto the scene in 2014\, she’s been a regular tour support for Dr John Cooper Clarke in venues across the UK and Europe. In 2016\, she released her début album Hot Plastic Moon with spoken word label Nymphs and Thugs. In 2018 her début poetry collection The Universe and Me was published by Wrecking Ball Press. In September 2021\, Toria was featured on the front cover and centrefold of The Big Issue North. Her second collection Another Time in Spacewas published in December 2022. Toria delivers spoken word workshops to community groups\, schools\, and prisons. She is passionate about using poetry as a vehicle for self-expression and connection.\n\n‘Joan Jett and Patti Smith’s better-looking kid sister.’ – Dr John Cooper Clarke\n\n‘Powerful\, accessible\, intelligent\, and musical. Just about all the things I love in a poet.’ – Dr Benjamin Zephaniah\n\nCarla Mellor is a Wigan-based Yorkshire poet who writes accessible\, down-to-earth\, and relatable ‘poetry for the people’. Carla’s debut collection Scraps is published by Wrecking Ball Press. Her poetry aided a Film Award win for Northern Heart Films. She’s the 2023 Huddersfield Literature Festival slam champion.\n\nJack Collins is a Leeds-born (and based) poet. As a gritty performer-poet\, he’s supported many bands\, including I am Kloot\, Badly Drawn Boy\, and The Fall. and has toured the world with John Cooper Clarke since 2010. His musical collaborations have seen him working with New Order and Philip Glass. His Ode To St. Anthony\, a poem dedicated to the Factory Records boss Tony Wilson and put to classical music by the composer Joe Duddell\, went to Number 1 in three official UK charts in August 2015. He has also worked in thousands of schools and his books are used in education throughout the UK. Passionate about taking live poetry to places it wouldn’t normally reach\, he’s read his work in prisons\, young offenders institutions\, mental health hospitals\, children’s homes\, youth clubs\, and pubs. He’s an Associate Fellow and Artist in Residence at the University of Westminster in London and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Manchester Metropolitan University for his groundbreaking work with poetry in education. \n‘I love Mike Garry’s poetry.
