SUMMARY:In Our Backyard 3
DESCRIPTION:In Our Backyard is BACK with a night of punk-fuelled attitude\, iconic rock\, musical bangers and finely spun rhythms.  Join us for this eclectic celebration of your local music scene! \nLine up:\nLoose Articles \nSpecialising in discordant\, hypnotic repetition\, tales of nights out\, and radical politics\, Loose Articles are a punk quartet with plenty to say. Their music speaks to all those determined to get through the age of austerity with tongue in cheek\, and two feet firmly on the dancefloor.\nPlying repetition (repetition\, repetition…) with ragged edges and a sardonic\, sarcastic drawl delivered with fierce\, in your face\, punk-fuelled attitude\, both feminine & threatening\, Loose Articles are here to make a point. \nSugar Crease \nSugar Crease are a selection box of musical bangers and have been compared to bands such as Talking Heads and Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. For folks of rum nature. Originally solely intended as a shed-based experimental 3 piece\, 2023 saw the line-up expanded to 6 members to prepare for live performances\, culminating in sold out shows around their local Oldham and Tameside area. \nShelf \nShelf are a band you can love for life\, a hypnotic mixture of guitar based dream pop set\, warm layers of ethereal vocals\, set against a pulsing wall of sound. Beautiful shimmering melodies\, refined\, finely spun rhythms\, golden intertwining harmonies\, a fuzzy glow. Kick back and let Shelf take you into an endless summer\, a timeless place. \nPlus44Kaligula \nRaised between the rock and hard place of British icons David Bowie and Annie Lennox\, and on screen legends such as Daniel Day Lewis\, plus44Kaligulas creation is a deadpan\, surrealist landscape where ego and identity collapse evoking scenes of Rene Magritte and Yorgos Lanthimos – crafting a modern myth for fractured times. \nGaol Bird \nScuzz Beat and Surf Kraut\, Post-Punk or Punk in the Post. Cabbage frontman Lee Wilson Rabello bring’s Gaol Bird. The Bird offer a vitriolic array of human emotions for cathartic release. Mossley Über Alles. \nStepford Wives \nStepford Wives are a Mancunian alternative band whose sound sits between post-punk tension\, grunge grit and melodic indie restraint. Their songs deal in pressure\, endurance and emotional honesty\, favouring atmosphere and dynamics over excess. There’s a lived-in quality to the writing — patient\, human and quietly intense. Known for immersive live performances\, Stepford Wives make music that trusts the listener and rewards repeat listens. \nPLUS: DJ sets from Jason Rushton to keep the party banging until midnight. \nPlease note this event has an age restriction of 14+\nUnder 18s must be accompanied by an adult.\nThis is a standing show. SUMMARY:John Bramwell (of I Am Kloot)
DESCRIPTION:“There’s a line in the E.E. Cummings poem ‘Somewhere I Have Never Travelled\, Gladly Beyond’ which goes ‘No one\, not even the rain\, has such small hands’ which I paraphrased to ‘Nothing can wash this away\, not even the rain’ –– I’ve always loved that imagery and intrigue… I’ve never been a realist\, the magic and mystery is where my heart lies and where my mind wonders…” John Bramwell. \nAs the singer in I Am Kloot from 1999 to 2014\, John Bramwell achieved a Mercury Prize nomination for 2010’s The Sky At Night\, a Top 10 chart position for 2013’s Let It All In\, numerous UK and European tours and a triumphant farewell at the Queen Elizabeth Hall with an orchestra in 2014. Now\, as a solo artist\, Bramwell travels the length and breadth of the UK. taking his heartwarming songs to the stage and enjoying another moment in time with his devoted fans. \nThe stunning 2023 sophomore solo album\, The Light Fantastic was an almost complete u-turn from the I Am Kloot outlook they were known for. Darker clouds banished and in replacement strings\, four-part harmonies and a dozen gloriously exhilarating\, beautifully crafted and observed songs about life\, humanity\, the universe and everything. As John put it\, “It’s been great to find the joy of making music once again. These are the most uplifting songs of my career.” \nBramwell’s razor sharp wit\, refreshingly true (and often hilarious) observations and instantly recognisable haunting vocal channelled through some of the most honest and direct songwriting of our times has seen Bramwell championed in rave reviews\, time after time. \n \n\nPraise for The Light Fantastic: \n‘The regular harmonising with his cast of supporting musicians is especially beautiful’ CLASH\n‘Wonderfully grown-up pop music delivered by an adept songwriter’ – 4* MOJO\n‘This is hazy music\, with purpose\, and very pretty with it.’ – 4* The Times\n‘A splendid solo set of sumptuous vocal harmonies’ – UNCUT \n‘A unique voice both literally and metaphorically’ – Lauren Laverne\n‘Bramwell’s new songs are spellbinding’ – The Guardian\n‘My favourite songwriter of all time’ – Cate Blanchett \n‘The UK’s finest export’ – New York Times \n\n\n \n\nPlease note this event has an age restriction of 14+ \nUnder 18s must be accompanied by an adult. \nDoors 7:30pm \nTickets: Seated £25* \nThis is a seated event with a mix of raked seating and step-free seating at ground level. SUMMARY:Crow
DESCRIPTION:Crow – Live at The Vale🗓 Saturday 24th May | 🕖 Doors 7pm | 🎟 Donate What You CanRecommended age: 14+ | Duration: ~1hr 30 mins \nA gig… with a twist. What starts as a live music performance by three musicians slowly transforms into something much stranger – and funnier. \nAs night falls\, songs give way to surreal surprises: playful illusions\, shadowy video projections\, and a good dose of offbeat comedy. Imagine a cross between a dreamy gig and a magic show gone slightly off the rails – more Tommy Cooper than David Blaine. \nCROW is a visually rich\, genre-bending experience that blends music\, theatre\, projection\, and sleight-of-hand into a darkly comic journey through the unexpected. \nCreated by Avanti Display – one of the UK’s most inventive outdoor performance companies – this is a show full of imagination\, absurdity\, and wonder. \n\n“A wonderfully curious and genre-defying musical and visual performance.”— Inside Out Dorset Festival \n\nFeaturing collaborations with:🎵 Seaming To (music)✍️ Lou Glanfield (words\, IOU)🎭 Mark Long (dramaturgy\, People Show)🎥 Chris Squire (AV design\, Impossible Arts) \n👁️‍🗨️ The evening opens with a special pre-show performance from Jon Mambo \n \nJon Mambo is a guitarist\, vocalist\, bass player and writer. He got his nickname ‘Mambo’ from earlier years as guitarist in the Manchester based Afro-Latin Jazz ensemble ” The Mambo’s”. Jon’s focus right now is on Brazilian and African style music played on the acoustic guitar and electric bass\, delving into the rhythmic and percussive foundations of the music and culture. \n\n\nPay what you can – no questions asked. We believe great art should be for everyone. SUMMARY:TC & The Groove Family + Support
DESCRIPTION:TC & The Groove Family are a 10-piece collective whose music celebrates the coming together of cultures\, and the unity that music can provide for everyone. Driven by drummer Tim Cook\, their live shows are powerful and dynamic\, exploring grooves and genres from the UK and around the world\, including afrobeat\, breakbeat\, jungle\, jazz and highlife. \nThe band have played alongside afro-fusion legends K.O.G & The Zongo Brigade and London jazzers Yussef Dayes\, Pyjaen and Cykada at shows in across the UK. In 2021\, the band performed as part of We Out Here’s online festival showcase\, before blowing the roof off of the Chai Wallah stage at Shambino in August. \nDebut album ‘First Home’ built upon the success of early singles\, finding support from Jamz Supernova and Craig Charles on BBC Radio 6 and Emily Pilbeam on BBC Introducing West Yorkshire\, as well as being playlisted on Jazz FM. The band recorded the album with Tom Excell (Nubiyan Twist\, ONIPA)\, and released it in June 2022 through Worm Discs ISnazzback\, corto.alto). Summer 2022 saw them make a name for themselves on the UK festival circuit\, with appearances at Glastonbury\, We Out Here\, Greenman and Kendal Calling topped with a crowning headline set on the Chai Wallah stage at Shambala. \n \nSupport comes from Ambiere \nAmbient fairy tale sounds with big beats. \nAmbiere explores the light and shade of life through her music. There isn’t a specific genre to best\ndescribe this artist’s work. However\, If you could imagine Fred again\, meeting up with Florence Welch\nand going to a 90’s rave ( after they’ve meditated) then maybe that’s the best way. SUMMARY:Funke and the Two Tone Baby & Duncan Disorderly and The Scallywags
DESCRIPTION:Join us on April 12th for this high energy double bill at The Vale! \nFunke and the Two Tone Baby \nFunke and the Two Tone Baby is a one man army. Uncategorised and uncharted. A blur of buttons and sweat. Powerful walls of grooving\, dirty electronica and a whirlwind of energy walk a fine line between 90’s dance\, electro-rock and alt-blues. \nCreated live and direct with loopers and samples\, F&TTTB sets the bar of how much sound a one-man band can produce\, as fat dance beats and filthy synth basslines are juxtaposed by a beaten up blues guitar\, sing-along anthems and glitchy harmonica. Layered songs of positivity and social harmony mesh perfectly with compulsive dance grooves and infectious riffs. \nOver the last 10 years F&TTTB has played over 1000 shows and each year his musical style and sonic output have grown and expanded along with a dedicated and cult following. Smashing a tour support with Dutty Moonshine Big Band and the accolade of biggest ever opening crowd at Beautiful Days Festival\, F&TTTB has proven he can hold his own on the biggest of stages\, and against the most powerful of bands. \nDuncan Disorderly and The Scallywags \nDuncan Disorderly and The Scallywags are a full-power party band guaranteed to bring the energy and ignite any crowd! Fusing ska\, calypso\, reggae\, and afrobeat\, our vibrant\, festival-ready sound is a celebration of rhythm\, fun\, and connection. Known for our silly\, high-spirited performances and infectious grooves\, we’re the ultimate feel-good band that keeps audiences dancing and laughing from the very first note. \nWith a massive following built from years of relentless gigging\, we’ve captivated crowds across the UK and Europe. Our adventures have taken us to iconic festivals like Glastonbury\, Boomtown\, and Secret Garden Party\, as well as countless gigs across Germany\, Italy\, and Spain\, where our unique energy has won over fans old and new. \n— \nStanding show. If you require a seat for accessibility please get in touch before the show via hello@the-vale.co.uk \nDoors 7:30pm \nTickets £15* \n*A limited number of donate what you can tickets are available on a first come first served basis. SUMMARY:MR WILSONS SECOND LINERS + DOGSHOW
DESCRIPTION:New Orleans meets 90s Manchester club classics… \nIn New Orleans\, funerals are celebrated in style\, with noisy brass bands processing through the streets. The main section of the parade is known as First Line\, but the real fun starts with the Second Line\, those who follow the band to enjoy the music\, marching with the musicians and twirling parasols or waving handkerchiefs. \nWelcome to Second Lining. \nA rabble of mischievous northerners\, Mr Wilson’s Second Liners form a traditional New Orleans Second Line. However\, this is no sombre occasion: Mr Wilson’s expend their collective musical talent paying homage to the diehard days of the Hacienda\, 90s club culture and its greatest hero\, Mr Tony Wilson. \nProudly stepping out in uniformed style\, they channel the spirit of Manchester’s 24 hour party people and get audiences dancing wherever they play. \nThis is a standing / dancing event with a very limited number of unreserved chairs and tables available on a first come first serve basis. Fusing live techno\, jazz\, dance musicianship\, their show comprises a battery-powered ‘Dog-Trolley’ in the\ncentre of the audience. From here Dogshow conduct a ritualistic ‘howling at the moon’ ceremony\, channelling raw animalistic energy. Join the spectacle and unleash your inner canine as we release the hounds back into The Vale in 2025. \nSoundcloud.com/dogshowparty \n \nTickets £15.50. SUMMARY:St John's Band: 90th Anniversary Concert
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to host Mossley’s St John’s Band for their 90th Anniversary Concert; an impressive milestone! \nAdult tickets available for £10\, under 16s go for £2. \nTickets available HERE \n  \nHistory of the Band \nThe Rev. W. Leeming was the man responsible for the formation of St Johns Band Mossley in 1933. He was a great Brass Band enthusiast and had formed Brass Bands at all of his previous churches as way of extending the social and cultural activities of the church. At the formation prospective players\, who had to be communicant members of the church\, got together to form the nucleus of the band. By May 1934\, after a lot of tuition and marching drills up and down Quickedge in all weathers\, the band were ready for their first Whit Friday Walks. They wore uniforms purchased from Eagley Mills (Bolton). \nDuring the war St John’s became the band of the (Home Guard) 35th Cheshire Regiment. At the cessation of hostilities membership rules were relaxed so that players from outside the parish could join\, gradually building the band up to full strength. \nIn 1983 the band reached one of its highest points by qualifying to play in the Fourth Section of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain at the Royal Albert Hall. Unfortunately\, the band was unplaced\, but what an unforgettable experience for those involved. \nThis level of success was achieved with the help and guidance of some well known conductors\, including Arthur Schofield (1970-1978)\, Harold Robinson (1979-1982) and Bert Howarth (1982-1983). \nNevertheless\, with players leaving for various reasons over the years the band has been on the verge of closure on three occasions\, twice in the early seventies when the band was lacking in numbers to lead the church in the whit Walks and once again in the late eighties when the band was struggling to hold rehearsals with regularity. \nThen in 1990 a group of community minded people notably Ralph Towle\, Rodney Oliver\, Ian Marsh and Barry Hague formed a committee inviting first Max Wassal as Secretary\, later Graham Hutchinson and Stephen Corbett to coach and train the band made up mostly of school children. This proved to be a huge success and Stephen stayed at the band as musical director until 2012. \nIn 1995 once again the band lost players when six of its leading members went to university\, a body blow after three years of successful results at contests. In seventy-five years (three generations) the world\, peoples lifestyles and interests have changed immensely and the band has had to change suit. \nIn 2012 the band were joined by Musical Director Paul Exton-McGuinness. Since then the band have gone from strength to strength\, with a new training band and beginner band to focus on eventually bringing fresh new players in to the main band. Paul left the band in July 2018. \nIn September 2018 Paul Towle was appointed as Musical Director\, Paul has long running family connections with the band\, his Grandfather\, Ralph Towle being one of the leading members of the group that helped get the band back on its feet almost 30 years ago. \nAlthough the band is not directly linked with the church anymore\, they do provide the music for the services throughout the year such as Christmas\, Harvest and of course the Whit Friday Walks. \nIn January 2023 David.W.Ashworth joined the band as musical director and we are extremely grateful for the time that David spent with us and shared his wealth of knowledge and experience. \nAs we move through 2024 and beyond\, we look forwards to what the future holds\, with a full thriving band the future is looking very bright. We’re extremely fortunate that Martin Gernon has stepped in to take the band to the Northwest Area Contest and hopefully this is a sign of good things to come.
